In the aftermath of Sandy, Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) teamed up with grassroots humanitarian efforts to open free treatment spaces in all boroughs as well as parts of New Jersey and Connecticut affected by the storm. AWB provides immediate disaster relief and recovery to communities that are in crisis resulting from disaster or human conflict by treating all who have been affected – survivors, first responders, emergency personnel and other care providers. Licensed acupuncturists including myself are volunteering to support this important service.
AWB uses community-style acupuncture to provide caring, compassionate treatment in a group setting. This model of treatment allows everyone treated to experience relief from stress and trauma together, alleviating pain and tension. When the entire group feels calm and quiet, hope, determination and resiliency rises powerfully within it. These methods have been used successfully in the wake of other natural disasters including the wildfires in San Diego in 2007 as well as Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
